This compact Lotos plasma cutter includes a handle for increased portability. Once set up you can cut alloy steel, copper, stainless steel, mild steel, and aluminum.

The Pilot Arc Technology gives you the cutting advantage by allowing the tip not to touch the metal and is used for cutting on rusty metal or rough surfaces.

The pilot arc torch cuts efficiently through rusty, rough, and even painted surfaces. Moreover, PAPST technology minimizes slag. PAPST is an advanced cooling system engineered in Germany. A digital inverter drives the plasma cutter and provides – as already mentioned – a maximum cutting current of 50 Amps.

The LTP5000D cuts mild steel with a thickness of up to 5/8″ and aluminum up to 1/2″

Thanks to the dual voltage system this machine is capable of running on 220V 50/60 Hz power, or with a pigtail on 110V 50/60 Hz (dual frequencies).

The plasma cutter includes a ground clamp, cable, air hose, air hose connections, plasma torch, and air regulator.

The maximum severance cutting thickness is 3/4″. With a weight of only 22.5 pounds, this robust system can achieve all of your cutting jobs.

Let’s take a closer look at the hard facts below:

OK, that’s fine so far. However, how does plasma cutting work in detail?

back to menu ↑

How does plasma cutting work?

Plasma is known as the fourth state of matter, after a solid, liquid, and gas. The matter is transferred from gas to plasma by heating up the gas to become steam and thus ionizing it to become plasma.

Plasma cutting is a process where inert gas is blown through a nozzle at high speed. In front of the nozzle, an electric arc is formed and this arc energizes the high speed flowing gas, creating the plasma. The cutting process is an operational friendly process and it is quicker to cut metal than many other mechanical cutting techniques.

How to operate a plasma cutter?

First of all, please make sure to read the operating manual carefully! This article here provides only a very brief description to give you an impression about working with the plasma cutter.

Make sure to wear correct protective equipment like shaded cutting goggles.

Setting up the plasma cutter includes having a power cord plug connection. Make sure to use power voltage (110VAC or 220 VAC) and hookup to avoid internal circuitry damage.

Connect the tube of high-pressure air properly to the copper connector. The copper screw must be connected to the torch securely at the end of the torch. The air plug of the torch is to be connected to the switch connector on the panel. If the pilot arc is present, the fork connector must be connected to the red terminal on the panel.

Turn on the power of the cutter and adjust the electrical current level by turning the knob to your preferred output current.

Now, bring the tip of the torch in contact with the object you are working on.

Check to see that the cutting current is adequate based on the thickness of the metal. Additional equipment that can be used includes a pigtail, wire brush, and extra consumables.

Pros and cons of the Lotos LTP5000D

Plasma cutting can do wonders for those who want to cut metals efficiently. For example it can withstand temperatures ranging from 14 and 104 degrees Fahrenheit and a 90% humidity level. In addition, the torch, which comes with a 10 ft cable is quite small and allows hard to reach spaces for cutting.

Of course, plasma cutting also has its drawbacks. First of all, dust formed by the compressed air must be regularly removed. Also, we recommend considering a respirator to avoid the toxic cut fumes.

Moreover, daily maintenance is a requirement to optimize the longevity of every plasma cutter. Because water or dampness can harm the plasma cutter – due to the electrical components inside – you should make sure to keep it dry. Of course, all electrical and mechanical connections have to be firm and in place so that the machine can work smoothly.
