If you are a welder like me, you are probably looking for welding caps that look good and protect your head at the same time. Besides being an additional style item, welding caps can regulate temperature, take up the sweat and protect you from weld sparks.

Of course, there are numerous ways to style yourself and a good alternative to do so are welding hats, bandanas and doo rags.

Directly picked from Amazon’s top seller list, I chose my personal 3 favorite welding caps.

Welding caps – buying Guide

In my opinion, it is better to look rather cool than odd. So the first thing I recommend you is to choose a cool design that fits you and your style.

2nd, breathable material that absorbs sweat and heat is a plus.

Moreover, you should look for flame retardant material if you plan to use your welding cap without additional protection against spark and spatter. It just hurts when molten metal sits on your hat and slowly burns through it.

Also check if the cap is washable, because some caps lose the flame resistance when washed. In addition, measure the size of your head and get a cap that fits your size.

Another plus is when the cap is designed to cover your neck for additional protection.

In my eyes, you don’t have to take an extra look at the price because the caps are very affordable.

5 Things to consider before buying a welding cap

  • Choose cool design
  • Take breathable material
  • Consider flame-retardant material
  • Consider correct sizing
  • Think about optional neck protection

Welding caps – sizes

How to determine head circumference (cap size)

To determine your head size, take a tape measure or a string that you will wrap around your head. Do this approximately 1/8″ above your ear. The band should be where the cap will sit. Don’t fit it too tight or too loose.

Get the measured value and compare it in the sizing table below.

If the length that you measure is between two sizes, choose the next largest size.

Sizing table

Use this sizing table to check correct cap size. Be reminded: Sizes can vary depending on the manufacturesr.

Head Circumference (Inches)Cap Size
21"6 3/4
21 3/8"6 7/8
21 3/4"7
22 1/4"7 1/8
22 5/8"7 1/4
23"7 3/8
23 1/2"7 1/2
24"7 5/8
24 1/2"7 3/4

Difference between crown depths

Standard welding caps come with a standard 7″ crown depth (=traditional fit) that sits on top of your ears.

Some welding caps with a 7 1/2″ crown depth will also cover your ear.
